Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage styles can vary greatly but all aim to relieve tensions in the superficial and deeper muscles, connective tissues and fascia.  Treatment can tend to be intense due to focused and deliberate work. 

Deep tissue techniques may be suitable for individuals who experience chronic or consistent pain, perform heavy physical activity (such as athletes and active jobs) or have sustained physical injuries.   

What can I expect?

Treatments are often for 1 hour, although 1.5 hour sessions are available.

An initial consultation includes a discussion about your presenting problem, your case history and where required, relevant physical assessments such as ‘range of movement’ will be conducted.  During assessments and treatment you may be fully or partially clothed with parts of the body covered by towels. Techniques used may include Swedish and deep tissue massage, Trigger point release, myofascial release, stretches, and after-care may be discussed. 

How often will I need treatment?

Frequency of sessions depends on the nature of your presenting issue and your response to treatment.  Some issues may require follow-ups weekly or fortnightly, others may be for maintenance on a monthly or ‘now-and-again’ basis.

Pre and post massage advice

 

  • If you ‘work out’ it is wiser to have a massage on a rest day or after your ‘work out’. It is not advisable to follow a deep tissue massage with the likes of weight training due to potential aggravation to tissue remodelling and healing stimulated by deep tissue treatment.
  • Recently injured areas should not be massaged for 24-48 hrs, however other muscle groups certainly can be and can bring relief to compensatory muscles.
  • After a treatment, it is best to permit rest or have low demands on you. Feeling drowsy and deeply relaxed post treatment is common; take a moment to readjust by perhaps sitting quietly or taking a brief walk, especially if needing to drive! Or better still organise someone to drive you home.
  • Drink plenty of water after body work in order to flush out toxins released during the treatment; hydration will help reduce the likelihood of aches, pains or headaches post treatment.
