Intense Pulsed Light Permanent Hair Reduction
Dianne was the first to provide Intense Pulsed Light hair reduction in Scotland. Since becoming available at Mulberry House early in 2001, IPL has been extremely popular with women and men of all ages. It works on all skin types and most hair colours. Free consultation available.

What makes this system special?
Traditionally light based hair depilation systems have been associated with lasers. As technology has progressed research has shown that Intense Pulsed Light ( IPL) systems are regularly producing better results than other systems originally available. IPL systems are non-laser, emitting light across a broader range of wavelengths which are absorbed by the melanin in the hair.

The Pulsar IPL is designed such that each light pulse is actually composed of a number of rapid shorter pulses. These 'multi-pulses' ensure a more controlled heating of the target hair whilst minimising heating of the surrounding skin. This means that a greater range of skin and hair types can be treated effectively and safely than was previously possible.

How does it work?
Pulses of light emitted from the Pulsar IPL are absorbed by the melanin of the hair causing the hair to heat up rapidly. The heat in the hair is transferred to the adjacent growth cells which in turn reach a temperature in excess of 70 . At this temperature the growth cells become permanently inactive and the follicle is unable to support future hair growth.

Who can be treated?
The ideal client will have dark hair and light skin, but due to the pulsed nature of the Pulsar IPL darker skin types can be treated safely. All hair thickness can also be treated successfully from the fine hair found on the upper lip to thick hairs of the pubic region.

Treatment Process
Initially your therapist will determine your hair and skin parameters, this being important to ensure safe and effective treatment. The area to be treated must be shaved and a coupling gel applied. The applicator head will be stepped across the skin and each flash will result in an area of 10mm x 50mm being treated.

Should I take precautions before and after treatment?
Direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided for up to four weeks before and after treatment unless a high factor sunscreen is used. Treated hair should be left in place for at least 4 days after which they can be removed or allowed to fall out naturally.

What Happens After Treatment?
Unlike many laser treatments the hairs are not vaporised but appear to 'grow' out slowly and after a period of between 1 to 3 weeks will fall out naturally. The area will remain hair-free until the next growth cycle - the duration of which will be dependent on the area being treated and on the individual. The next treatment will remove this growth. Subsequent treatments will be required until the area is completely hair free.

How long will treatments take?
With its large 50mm x 10mm applicator head, treatment using the Pulsar IPL is very fast. Facial areas can be treated in a matter of minutes whilst larger areas can be treated in around an hour. Typically 3 to 5 treatments will be sufficient to significantly reduce hair density.

Is it Painful?
No. The feeling has been likened to being tapped with a hairbrush. This is because each individual hair shaft is warmed to greater than 70 which causes a sudden but short sensation of heating in the individual follicles.

Is it safe?
Yes. Hair depilation using Intense Pulsed Light is one of the safest techniques available. Any redness that may occur immediately after treatment will disappear within a matter of hours.

Laser Therapy for Smoking Cessation
Stopping smoking with the help of Laser Therapy is the way to do it with lots of support. The sessions take place over three consecutive days when the need is greatest.

Dianne worked and trained for six years with Action on Smoking and Health Scotland. During this period she was responsible for providing workplace smoking cessation groups, trained as a counsellor and ran a one to one smoking cessation helpline. She is co-author of the publication 'The Essential Guide to Stopping Smoking'.

In 1996 Dianne established her own company, Smoking Consultancy Associates, and since then has provided smoking cessation support and advice to many companies and individuals.

Since discovering the advantages of using laser therapy to support smokers wishing to stop, this has been used in conjunction with counselling and guidance.

The stop smoking programme with laser therapy takes place over a period of three (usually consecutive) days. The majority of clients stop at the first appointment, and by day three are confidently and happily smoke free.

How does it work?
Laser light therapy works on a principle similar to acupuncture by using non-toxic, low density beams to stimulate energy points on the hands, face and ears. It is totally pain free, very relaxing and extremely successful. Clients who have smoked heavily for years, and 'tried everything' are amazed at the ease with which they finally manage to kick the habit.
